CORFU. A peripheral road is being sought from Campaniolo, a car park in San Rocco, and permanent parking spaces for residents. As for the buses, another study will be carried out later!

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) was approved at Monday's municipal council meeting with votes from the Poulinos and Ydraiou factions. Lasi and Karidis' party voted against, while Takis Metallinos abstained. Overall, the content of the comments and arguments seemed to fall short of the level required for the many proposed regulations from the Plan, most of which require courage and funding! Furthermore, the mayor stated during the meeting that this is just a framework and that everything will be determined by subsequent implementation actions. In some cases (e.g., traffic), a specific and detailed study will be required again.

The council accepted Poulinos' compromise proposal to prioritise the identification of parking spaces for permanent residents in the old town. There, the mayor stressed the need to clarify the status of residency, to confirm that the individual actually lives in the historic centre!

The Plan aims to alleviate traffic in the town by opening a peripheral road through Campaniolo, which will connect the North-South axes, to equip the centre with an underground parking facility in San Rocco (which the Trepeklis municipal authority abandoned) with at least 350 spaces, and it was stated that there is no investor interest for this. It also aims to convert a number of roads in the town and suburbs to low-traffic zones, moving forward with extensive one-way streets. In the meantime, paid on-street parking will return.

As for the buses, the planner put it as a secondary priority, suggesting that their traffic be regulated after the implementation of other traffic measures and following a special study.
