΄Mermaids in Action΄ clean up sea at Porto Timoni
CORFU. In the clean-up, toilet paper, nets, plastic and glass bottles, plastic caps, a sofa, as well as a piece of an old boat engine, amongst other things, were found.
On the mermaid-shaped island of Corfu, The Mermaid Island, a voluntary clean-up of the seabed took place at Porto Timoni in the northwest part of the island by volunteer groups from the area as well as local businesses from 17:00 to 19:00 on Sunday, June 16.
The clean-up took place on the beach and the seabed of the area, which is overwhelmed by a large number of visitors both from land and sea during the summer months.
In the clean-up, toilet paper, nets, plastic and glass bottles, plastic caps, a sofa, as well as a piece of an old boat engine, amongst other things, were found.
The underwater clean-up was undertaken by Mermaids Corfu, Thessaloniki Mermaid Academy, and the Corfu Diving Club, which is based at Agios Georgios Pagon beach.
The support for the project from the land and for the transportation of rubbish was provided by the speedboat rental businesses of Agios Georgios Pagon.
North Corfu EPOMEA action group took part along with Corfu Environmental Association and the THALASSA MAS local volunteer youth group.
It was also supported by Afionas Cultural Society.
For the protection of divers and swimmers, the presence of the Corfu Coast Guard was requested.
We would like to sincerely thank the 30 individuals who participated actively, thereby conveying the encouraging message to the new generation that we are taking action here and now. Together we are stronger, and change begins with small everyday actions by each of us.
The Mermaids in Action schedule for 2025 has already been set in a sensitive aquatic environment in Greece that needs our attention and care.
