Work on Garitsa shore road resumes

The long-standing project for the restoration of the Garitsa shore wall and pavement, from the Desyllas factory to Anemomylos, has resumed. Soon, traffic regulations will be implemented in this section of Demokratias Avenue, with one-way traffic on the road.
The works had been temporarily stopped by the contractor due to unpaid invoices, which led the contractor to exercise his legal right to halt works if payment is delayed for reasons not due to him. The requested amount has been paid, and the project is now continuing without interruption, the Deputy Regional Governor of Technical Works and Planning, Giorgos Mamalos told Enimerosi. He said that during this contentious period, the work progressed at a slower pace, focused on the area by the sea.
The suspension of works is also expected to be formally lifted. The project, which was contracted on 10-08-2023, has been progressing at a slow pace since its start (September 2023), with the major challenge being its completion within the timeline. The deadline for completion is one year from the signing of the contract, although an extension is not ruled out due to the two-month work stoppage.
"The contractor is working normally and without interruption," Mr. Mamalos told Enimerosi. "The contractor claims that the project will be completed within his contractual obligations, that is, in the autumn." A few days ago there was a meeting between the contractor and the Deputy Regional Governor, during which the contractor committed to intensifying the work on the coastal front with the aim of reinforcing the construction site with more personnel to accelerate the project's progress.
What work has been done
The first and time-consuming phase has already been completed, which involves the detailed mapping of the area and the recording of the stones that have been temporarily removed to carry out the necessary excavations and concrete work for the new wall on the inner side of the platform. The slabs have been removed only from the critical points where partial pavement collapse has been observed and in some other spots where minor subsidence was detected. Currently, the work is progressing in the area next to the sea.
The measures for the restoration of the coastal wall and pavement include the construction of a reinforced concrete wall inside the stone quay wall, filling of voids and replacement of the embankments of the Garitsa shore road pavement with suitable riprap, completion and integration of prefabricated foot protection elements using the assembly technique employed in the previous phase of work, restoration of pavements after mapping, removal in the presence of an archaeologist, reinstallation in the exact same positions, and replacement of damaged slabs with ones of the same quality and origin as those used in the previous phase of work.
The project's budget amounts to 995,000 euros, and its funding comes from the Public Investment Programme. Once executed, the entire shore front will be restored.
Traffic regulations coming
The Ionian Islands Regional Authority is ready to implement traffic regulations from the Desyllas factory to Anemomylos with one-way traffic on the road, so that the excavations and concrete work for the new wall on the inner side can proceed without interruption.
The traffic regulations, which will be officially announced by the relevant Authorities, are deemed necessary as the construction site will occupy part of the roadway.
