Water pipe now fixed - after creating underground ΄river΄!
CORFU. "It is estimated that the leakage there was many tens of cubic metres of water per hour!" says Mayor Stefanos Poulimenos.
Hidden underground damage that was depriving the town's main water supply system of significant water reserves was discovered and repaired yesterday by a DEYAK crew.
The president of the municipal company, Achilleas Mazis, told Enimerosi that a coordinated effort has been made recently to identify these hidden damages, in order to gradually reduce the losses.
This factor, combined with drought and increased consumption, are considered the main reasons for the water shortage faced by the Central Municipality this year.
Achilleas Mazis said that DEYAK collaborated with a company that assisted in the operation to locate the specific leak in Kanoni. Subsequently, the necessary work was scheduled and carried out during the night to cause the least possible inconvenience to consumers.
He said that the restoration works were completed on time, resulting in DEYAK reopening the pipelines at 5:15 in the morning, allowing time for the filling of the Analypsis reservoirs and for water to be restored early, to almost all households.
The Municipality is expressing its satisfaction with this first step towards 'rescuing' a significant amount of water that was leaking into the underground aquifer.
Underground 'river'
The leak discovered following the excavation resembled a river, as can be seen in the video below.
In a social media post, the Mayor of Central Corfu, Stefanos Poulimenos, states that the major damage to the main pipeline, which transports water from the Chrysida springs to the Analypsi reservoirs in Kanoni, was repaired in the early morning hours by a DEYAK crew.
"It is estimated that the leakage there was many tens of cubic metres of water per hour! We owe a big THANK YOU to the members of the crew who worked there under difficult conditions and produced a noticeable result in the town's water supply."
He said that, although a major leak has been fixed, the network remains "like a sieve," as he characteristically says. "Efforts are ongoing to get through the summer with as few problems as possible..." added the Mayor.
