Work begins on new indoor gym in Alykes

CORFU. It will have permanent stands with 300 seats and a single hall that can accommodate multiple indoor and track events. The completion of the project is expected in two years.

The construction of the Indoor Gymnasium-Training Centre in Alykes, Potamos has begun, as announced today by Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou. Representatives of the contracting company, along with the president of the Corfu Gymnastics Club, Grigoris Mastoras, were present at the site and stated that the project will be completed according to the study and the contract.

The Mayor expressed great satisfaction with the commencement of construction for the new Indoor Training Centre-Gymnasium, stating:

"The need for modern sports facilities in our area is undeniable. I am very happy that during our term, we succeeded in promoting the construction of the largest sports project that has been undertaken in recent years on our island. We overcame difficulties, completed the study, achieved the inclusion of the project in a funding programme, put it out to tender and signed the construction contract.

Today, we are pleased to see the contractor ready to start the work with the placement of the project sign.

I hope that the project will be completed on schedule and that soon the children of Corfu and our other sports clubs will train in a modern space under the most appropriate conditions, where large events will also be hosted."

The President of the Corfu Gymnastics Club, Grigoris Mastoras, stated, "After 42 years of aspirations, we see the beginning of a project that we anticipated and fought for, for our children to be able to engage in sports safely under modern conditions.

We thank everyone who contributed to making this project a reality, and we also thank the Mayor for her efforts to bring us to this day. We will closely monitor the progress of the work, and I hope that soon Corfu will finally have the new sports facility it so desperately needs."

In addition to the Mayor, also present today at the site where the new Indoor Gymnasium-Training Centre will be constructed, were the representative of the contracting company, Anastasios Anthis, the Deputy Mayor of Technical Services, Nikos Kalogeros, the President of the Corfu Gymnastics Club, Grigoris Mastoras, members and staff of the Corfu Gymnastics Club, and the DEPAN technical advisor, Vaggelis Bamichas.

The new Indoor Gymnasium-Training Centre is being constructed on a plot located in Alykes, Potamos (Emporiko Kentro), which was provided for this purpose by the Corfu Gymnastics Club to the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality.

The construction project of the new Indoor Gymnasium-Training Centre has a budget of 5.2 million Euros and has been included in the "A. Tritsis" programme following a funding proposal submitted by the Municipality.

The contract with the contracting company was signed in early October of last year by Mayor Meropi Ydraiou, in the presence of the DEPAN technical advisor and the President and members of the Board of Directors of the Corfu Gymnastics Club.

The new Training Centre will have permanent stands with 300 seats, a single hall that can accommodate various indoor and track events, such as basketball and volleyball, as well as a track and field training area. Greenery and a parking area will be created in the surrounding space.
