Meeting at North Corfu Town Hall to discuss problems in education

CORFU. The main focus of the discussion was on school transportation and infrastructure.

(Office of Giorgos Mahimaris) North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris held a working meeting with education authorities and parents on Tuesday, October 31, at the Town Hall in Acharavi.

The agenda of the discussion included current issues affecting the school community of North Corfu, such as the matter of school transportation that has not yet been resolved by the Ionian Islands Regional Authority, causing inconvenience to parents and disrupting family budgets.

School infrastructure

The discussion also focused on the topic of school infrastructure, specifically the need for an additional classroom at the kindergarten of the 2nd Special School in Velonades, the spatial planning and construction of new kindergartens in Avliotes, Platonas and Thinalia, and the exploration of the possibility of establishing a kindergarten in Kassiopi. Additionally, they discussed the assessment of needs and specialties for the operation of a Vocational High School in North Corfu, the replacement of containers at the Agros Junior High and High School, the construction of a new Junior high school in Peroulades, and the establishment of a Parents' School to support parents in their complex role and better address incidents of school bullying.

"We are confident that through collaboration among all relevant authorities, we can resolve the issues that concern pupils, parents and the educational staff." stated Giorgos Mahimaris. "Education is a priority for the Municipal Authority of North Corfu, and it is the duty of all of us to ensure all the parameters related to the smooth operation of modern educational facilities for our youth. Already, the majority of the issues discussed at the above-mentioned meeting are in progress."

 

The meeting was attended by the following on behalf of the Municipality: Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris;  Council President and President of the Municipal Education Committee, Panayiotis Papadatos; Deputy Mayor of Circular Economy, Environment, Social Policy and Public Relations, Spyridoula Kokkali.

From the Ionian Islands Regional Primary and Secondary Education Department, there were Regional Director Petros Aggelopoulos, Primary Education Director for Corfu, Despina Savvidou, and Special Education and Inclusive Education Advisor Ioannis Magginas.

On behalf of the North Corfu Parents' Association, the President, Aspasia Protopsalti and the General Secretary, Amalia Goudeli, participated.
