School bus service protests escalating
CORFU. The Central Corfu Parents΄ Association invites you to participate in a mass protest demonstration that will take place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the former Prefecture building (opposite Municipal Theatre).
Statement from Central Corfu Parents' Association:
While they assured us a few days after schools opened that school transportation would be arranged very soon, they did not follow through on that promise. After a meeting with them, the Central Corfu Parents' Association, SEPE (Secondary Education Teachers' Union), and ELME (Primary Education Teachers' Union), they promised us that on Wednesday, September 20th, most school routes would be operational. Once again, they did not keep their promises. And we are in the situation now where, since Monday, we have only 29 out of the 165 school routes in operation!
Approximately 3,000 pupils have not been able to use school buses for the past two weeks, and it appears as if this unacceptable situation will continue for much longer.
Your false promises and your negligence anger us. We will not allow our children to be on the streets and miss their lessons. We will not allow our children to stay at home when they should be in school.
Both the Ministry and the Ionian Islands Regional Authority are responsible for the fact that in the year 2023, there are children out of school due to a lack of transportation! Unless Ms. Kratsa, the Regional Authority and the Ministry of Education believe that parents have the ability to travel 90 kilometres per day (round trip) to transport their children from Lefkimmi to the Music School!
You are responsible along with the Ministry of Education, and you are playing with us and our children!
The Regional Authority must find a solution now! As long as the right to transport our children is a commodity, this situation will persist. The ultimate solution is safe public transportation with the exclusive responsibility of the state.
We call on all Parent Associations decide to join us in a mass protest demonstration on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the former Prefecture building.
We hope to find Ms. Regional Governor present!
