Italian Camorra fugitive in Corfu Prison
CORFU. The fugitive appeared before the Corfu Prosecutor, who then ordered that he be held in detention in Corfu Prison.
The 60-year-old Italian fugitive Vincenzo Laporta was brought to appear before the Corfu Prosecutor on Monday morning.
After his statement, the Prosecutor ordered his detention in Corfu Prison, and whether he will be extradited or not will be decided by the Judicial Council based on the documents that the Italian judicial authorities send to the corresponding Greek authorities.
The 60-year-old fugitive, wanted for years, with sentences exceeding ten years of imprisonment, including charges related to money laundering, was unexpectedly apprehended and caught early on Friday afternoon, August 4th, in Gouvia, where he was living with his partner. He had been working lately at an Italian restaurant in the area of Spilia, in Corfu old town.
The arrest of the Italian, who is alleged to be a member of the infamous Camorra organisation from Naples, came through the collaboration of Corfu police and the Naples Carabinieri of, under the coordination of a police officer from the Italian Embassy in Athens.
