Wildfires continuing for sixth day in Rhodes

RHODES. There are three main fronts in Rhodes on Sunday morning, July 23rd. In Kiotari and the southwest towards Gennadi, where earthmoving operations are taking place to prevent the fire from crossing the stream; from Apollona to Prophet Elias, where there are continuous reignitions and efforts are being made to prevent it from spreading northwards towards the dense forest, and in the Laerma-Gadoura area.

According to the Fire Department HQ, the forces have been reinforced in the early morning hours. So, early this morning, 266 firefighters, 16 ground teams, 42 vehicles, 4 helicopters and three airplanes were in operation, while another helicopter is coordinating the operation.

During the night, residents of the villages of Masari, Malona, and Haraki were ordered to evacuate their communities and move towards Rhodes Town. Earlier, evacuation was also requested for those in the villages of Lindos and Kalathos, as well as in the settlement of Pefka.

The Fire Department Press Officer, Vasilis Vathrakoyiannis, denied that there was any arrest of an arson suspect on the evening of Saturday, July 22nd.
