CORFU. The smoke has travelled approximately 950km south west, covering an area of approximately 110,000 sq.km.

The smoke clouds from the wildfires around Alexandroupolis have reached the other side of Greece.

Residents and visitors panicked as they believed it to be a wildfire outbreak on their island.

As can be seen on the meteo map, the smoke has covered Lefkada, Cephalonia and Zakynthos.

In an image taken by the European satellite Meteosat-11 and processed by the Meteo unit of the National Observatory in Athens, the severity and extent of the forest fires that are active in Greece are depicted up to this time (Tuesday 22/08/2023 09:45). The dense smoke has covered the sky in several areas in the country.

Smoke can be seen over the Northern and Central Aegean Sea from the forest fires in Evros and Rodopi, as well as from the fire over Viotia. The smoke from the fire in the Evros region has travelled about 950 kilometres southwest, covering an area of approximately 110,000 square kilometres.
