193 driving offences in the Ionian Islands

CORFU. 24 arrests were made.

Between 18:00 on Wednesday 10 and 02:00 on Thursday 11 May, police in Corfu, Zakynthos, Cephalonia and Lefkada carried out checks for the following:

- Theft and burglary
- Dangerous driving
- Violations of regulations at catering establishments
- Drug dealing
- Illegal immigrants

462 vehicles and 585 individuals were checked, leading to 24 arrests - 9 in Corfu, 1 in Cephalonia, 10 in Zakynthos and 4 in Lefkada - for the following offences:

- 2 for possession of drugs
- 2 for theft
- 1 for illegal possession of a weapon
- 4 for illegal residency
- 2 for illegal travel documents
- 1 with arrest warrant outstanding
- 7 for driving without a licence
- 1 for drunkeness
- 3  catering establishments for lack of proper health certificates
- 1 for illegal trading

There were 193 driving offences, including the following:

- 17 driving under the influence
- 47 speeding
- 11 not wearing seat belts
- 22 not wearing crash helmet
- 6 using mobile phone whilst driving
- 12 without driving licences
- 1 with uninsured vehicle
- 7 without MOT

24 vehicles were immobilised for driving without a licence, not wearing crash helmets and not having MOT.

The following violations were also found:
- 7 cases of smoking in no smoking areas.
- 1 street trading
- 3 using public area without a permit

Police also found and seized the following:
- Small amounts of cannabis
- 16 pills
- 24 shotgun cartridges
- Various products being sold illegally
