CORFU. Leader of the Opposition Alexis Tsipras, who is in Corfu, took the opportunity to throw a traditional clay pot from a balcony - Deputy Minister for Immigration & Asylum Giorgos Koumoutsakos is also here.

The First Resurrection took place at 11:00 this morning in an enthusiastic, celebratory atmosphere with the noisy smashing of the 'botides' - traditional clay pots.

Alexis Tsipras

The Leader of the Opposition, Alexis Tsipras, is in Corfu this year on a family holiday. He also took the opportunity to throw a clay pot off a balcony in Capodistriou St. behind Liston.

Deputy Minister in Corfu

The Deputy Minister for Immigration and Asylum, Giorgos Koumoutsakos, is also in Corfu this year and is attending the religious celebrations along with Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas and the party's parliamentary candidates, joining the VIPs and local authority in the religious ceremonies and processions.

Celebratory atmosphere

The Corfiot President of the National Greek Tourism Organisation, Angela Gerekou, also threw a clay pot from the balcony of her flat in Liston, as she does every year.

Crowds gathered from early in the morning in Spianada, Liston and all the small alleys in the historic centre to enoy this unique tradition.

As the bells ring out at 11:00 for the First Resurrection, Corfiots throw large clay pots (botides) full of water from their balconies. The 'botides' are clay pots with a narrow neck and two handles and balconies are specially decorated, as are the pots with red ribbons - Corfu's colour.

The Philharmonic Bands were impressive, as ever, creating a coloured 'river' amongst the thousands gathered there.
