CORFU. The mayor is sorry about the incident with the journalist in the park.

During a press conference the mayor of Corfu referred to the incident that took place on the night of the Resurrection, following a journalist’s request for a public statement, which he declined.

As he stated, his reaction was “in the heat of the moment,” while also expressing his regret “for what happened, both in terms of the place and the manner.” He stated that the Resurrection is a moment of special symbolism, which “belongs to the citizens, to faith, to collective emotion, and to hope,” stressing that in such circumstances public discourse should serve unity rather than confrontation.

Regarding the overall assessment of the Easter events, he described them as “by common admission successfully organised.” As he noted, tens of thousands of residents and visitors were present in Corfu’s old town, with the events unfolding smoothly.

According to data from the Central Port Authority, there was a slight decrease in arrivals compared to 2025—around 5% in passenger traffic and a larger drop in vehicles and buses—something the mayor described as “understandable” and not affecting the overall picture.

He made special reference to the positive comments recorded about the town’s historic centre, the island’s natural beauty, the Easter traditions, and the contribution of the Philharmonic bands and choirs in creating the solemn atmosphere.

The mayor underlined that a decisive role in the success was played by the cooperation between the Municipality and the Church, the Police, the Traffic Police, the Port Authority, and all involved bodies, while he gave particular thanks to workers in cleaning, daily services, lighting, greenery, water supply, and civil protection services, as well as to volunteers.

He also made special mention of professionals in the catering sector for their cooperation, as well as the media for promoting the events, noting that “Corfu has proven once again this year that it can combine tradition with a high level of organisation.”
