CORFU. Opposition parties against the decision due to the conditions of the contract signed by the Municipality and the tenant.

Central Corfu Municipal Council has approved a six-month suspension of rent payments and a six-month extension of the lease for the Aktaion Cafe property.

This decision was made in response to a request from the tenant, CORFU ON LIST AKTAION MON IKE (Ioannis Group), who requested a 13-month rent suspension due to structural problems with the building, which are estimated to cost €79,700 to repair according to engineers and the agreement of the Urban Planning Authority.

Not provided for in contract

The objections of the majority of opposition councillors mainly focused on the terms of the contract, as it clearly states that the Municipality is not responsible for the actual condition of the building.

However, the response of Mayor Meropi Ydraiou was that the damages that existed in the property were impossible to detect before the dismantling of the materials and that the problems with the load-bearing structure are the responsibility of the owner.

In addition, Deputy Mayor Mimis Katehis stated that the amount of €79,700 requested by the tenant to be offset is very low compared to the actual cost of the work, which could exceed €200,000.

Why 13 months?

The decisive intervention came from the Laiki SIspirosi councillor Yiannis Borbotis, who asked to learn why a suspension of 13 months (with a monthly rent of 16,000) -  a total amount that would greatly exceed the cost of the work - was being requested. Deputy Mayor of Finance, Giorgos Pantelios, eventually agreed with this and the proposal was reconfigured to six months rent suspension and a six-month extension of the contract.

The proposal, as reformulated, was eventually approved by the majority of councillors.
