"Our protests came up against a police barrier," complain students
CORFU. Two student protests on Wednesday morning and evening were blocked by a strong police presence.
The student unions report that strong police forces prevented them from entering the area. They later submitted their demands, which were read out at the Summit, according to the Dean of the Ionian University, Andreas Floros, as reported in Enimerosi.
Statement from Department of Audiovisual Arts Occupation Coordination Committee:
"Representatives of the Coordinating Committee submitted the common nationwide demands of the Occupation Coordinating Committees as they were formed after the first counter-summit. After the submission of the demands, those present left as the suffocating police presence left no room for any movement.
In the evening, a protest rally was held by members of the Department of Audiovisual Arts Occupation Coordination Committee outside the Ionian Academy. This time the police presence was even stronger and there were moments when police forces tried to intimidate those present with threats and gestures. At the same time, a concert by students of the Music Department was taking place inside the Ionian Academy. Testimonies of students inside the building revealed to members of the student community that there were orders prohibiting exit from the Ionian Academy.
After two hours of peaceful protest, the body of protesting students attempted to leave Aspioti Street as had been agreed. Riot police blocked the road, not allowing the safe exit of the march. For an hour, the body of students stood in front of the riot police shouting slogans until the police forces withdrew.
