Audiovisual Arts students stage sit-down protest

CORFU. Students from the university Faculty of Audiovisual Arts staged a sit-down protest at the Ionian Academy as part of the first "Counter-Summit" in opposition to the ongoing Rectors΄ Summit in Corfu.

Students from the university Faculty of Audiovisual Arts staged a sit-down protest at the Ionian Academy as part of the first "Counter-Summit" in opposition to the ongoing Rectors΄ Summit in Corfu.

The mobilisations were decided on Sunday at the first nationwide meeting of coordinating occupations with the following demands:
 

  • The immediate withdrawal of the police cordon around the occupied Rectorate of the University of Athens (EKPA).
  • A clear and immediate statement from the Rector of EKPA, M. Dimopoulos, regarding the occupation of the Rectorate.
  • The permanent removal of the former Vice-Rector A. Tsiaras from the University and involvement in any other educational process, as one year after numerous allegations of harassment and threats against him, he still remains in the academic community.
  • The immediate establishment and operation of the disciplinary council for the removal of the former Vice-Rector A. Tsiaras.
  • The immediate removal of any university employee with inappropriate behaviour.
  • Free and unconditional catering for all schools under the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture.
  • Immediate satisfaction of all student demands regarding Law 85/2022.
  • Free postgraduate and pedagogical programmes.
  • Immediate abolition of the university police.
  • Immediate abolition of Law 4623/2019, which abolishes academic asylum.
  • Immediate abolition of Law 2573/2021, which abolishes art classes in schools.
  • The immediate recognition of the Tempi accident as a state-government crime.
  • Immediate establishment of a public and free university and new university departments for performing arts throughout Greece. Simulation procedures for graduates of higher art schools (Consultation with all collective bodies for the regulation of these procedures).
  • No revision of Article 16, which ensures that universities are exclusively public and free.
  • Further staffing of public performing arts schools with necessary personnel and equipment for our studies.
  • Immediate resignation of the prosecutor of the Supreme Court, the resignation of the far-right neoliberal government of ND and the departure from the political scene of all those who, either through the policies they implemented or the positions they took, led to the fragmentation and privatisation of the railway network and trains.
