CORFU. The bridge will close again after Easter for the second stage of repairs.

Potamos bridge has reopened to traffic following the completion of the first stage of repair and renovation injecting concrete into the structure to stabilise it.

Work began on 9 February and was completed earlier than the scheduled one month. The bridge was opened once again for traffic yesterday but not for heavy loads. Over the three or so weeks that the work was being carried out traffic was diverted via other roads.

Second stage to follow

According to the schedule, a survey of the bridge will be carried out in order to begin the second stage of the project. Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure and Technical Works Manolis Orfanoudakis said there will be static reinforcement of the bridge both on the surface and with cement injections at the base as opposed to the original plan for work to be done on the river bed.

Third stage

In the third stage hydraulic work will be carried out, a bypass created from upstream to downstream so that if there is flooding the bridge doesn't bock the water and redevelopment and beautification of the surrounding area as required by the archaelogical department.

The bridge was damaged by the Balos storm on 14 October, 2021 and had theoretically been closed to vehicles and pedestrians as it wasn't considered safe. However, due to lack of policing the measure was never implemented and people continued to use the bridge.

The aim is to complete the repair and restoration work in order that the bridge be safe for everyone and, as stated by Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa, the possibility of constructing an additional modern bridge will be looked into.
