LARISSA. "We are in manual mode throughout the Athens-Thessaloniki network".

The president of the train drivers' association Kostas Genidounias said that neither the traffic lights nor the indicators nor the traffic control system are working on the Athens-Thessaloniki route.

"Nothing works. Everything is done manually. We are in manual mode throughout the Athens-Thessaloniki network," Mr. Genidounias told ERT. He went on to say that "neither the indicators nor the traffic lights nor the traffic control system are working. If they had been working, the drivers would have seen the red light and the trains would have stopped 500 meters away from each other".

General Confederation of Greek Workers Secretary

The General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) General Secretary Nikos Kioutsoukis said there is a lack of modern GPS systems on trains.

Speaking to Open TV he said that "the problems are long-standing. Let me remind you that since 1995 our country has been struggling to have a high-speed rail network - up to 200km - when other countries are trying for 500km. There is a double line that has not been completed for years, while modern GPS systems have not been installed yet, they do not operate".
