The head-on collision between two trains occurred near Tempe outside Larissa. The following is the latest update from the Fire Brigade press officer Vassilis Vathrakoyiannis and Hellenic Police press officer Konstantia Dimoglidou.

Fire Brigade

"The search and rescue operation at the site of the rail accident at the entrance to Tempe valley is continuing.

At this time, firefighters are concentrating their efforts on the first two carriages of the passenger train, which have been lifted with the help of a crane.

The confirmed number of dead is 32 and 53 are hospitalised with injuries."

Hellenic Police

"Family and friends of passengers on the Hellenic Train train travelling from Athens to Thessaloniki can contact Larissa Police at 2410683175-6 for information about passengers who were evacuated safely to Thessaloniki and those who were taken to hospital.

The process of identification has begun at Larissa General Hospital and for a number of dead there will be a process of biological identification.
