Corfu Hospital chapel to open - with ministerial intervention

CORFU. The Archbishop said, "There was negative response from the previous administrations - Kikilias and Roubatis helped things progress."

The chapel that has been built near the hospital entrance is being prepared to welcome believers.

Archbishop Nektarios conducted an inauguration service yesterday and spoke out about the negative responses from "previous administrations".

The ARchbishop said that the construction of the chapel was made possible due to the intervention of the then Minister of Health Vassilis Kikilias along with the full cooperation of the departing hospital director Leonidas Roubatis.

Opening on 5 May

The foundation stone of the chapel was laid by Archbishop Nektarios on 15 February, 2021 with the attendance of Deputy Minister of Health Zoi Rapti and the hospital director and the official opening will take place on 5 May, the feast day of Agia Irene.

The Church issued the following statement:

"On 31 January, 2023 Nektarios, Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos and Diapontia Islands conducted an inauguration service for the newly-built chapel in the name of Agia Irene and Agios Loukas at Corfu General Hospital.

The foundation stone of the chapel was laid by Archbishop Nektarios on 15 February, 2021 with the attendance of Deputy Minister of Health Zoi Rapti and the hospital director Leonidas Roubatis.

Intervention "from above"

The chapel has been built through great efforts over several years as the Metropolitan Church came up against many difficulties and negative responses from previous administrations. Following the intervention of the Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias and with the agreement and cooperation of the hospital director the construction of the holy chapel was completed.

With great labour and toil, with the supervision of Archbishop Nektarios, the significant financial contribution from Konstantinos Savel, in memory of his sister Irene and the late officer Sofronis Mavronas. Of course, the Metropolitan Church and the following of Agios Spyridonas contributed to the construction work.

The following were present at the inauguration service: Corfu MP Dimitris Biangis, Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa, Central Corfu Mayor Meropi Ydraiou, Deputy Regional Governor Melita Andrioti, Municipal Council President Dimitris Metallinos, Hospital Director Leonidas Roubatis, hospital medical, nursing and administration staff, priests and other memberso f the public.

Following the service the Archbishop thanked God and the Holy Trinity and the saints in whose name the chapel has been built as well as the director Leonidas Roubatis for his excellent support and cooperation and the then Health Minister who assisted in the completion of the work with his intervention.

He thanked all those who physically and morally gave their support until the chapel was completed and announced that the official opening will take place on 5 May, the feast day of Agia Irene."
