CORFU. The work was carried out following an inspection by Deputy Mayor Theoharis Yiotis and Garitsa Park Cultural Society President Alekos Vergis.

Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands municipal crews cut down most of the dead and dangerous trees and branches in Garitsa-Anemomylos park yesterday.

The work was carried out following an inspection by Deputy Mayor Theoharis Yiotis and Garitsa Park Cultural Society President Alekos Vergis along with municipal agronomist Mr. Zaragas and the Society's agronomist during which they agreed on which trees and branches should be removed.

Over 20 dead and dangerous trees, which had been marked off during the inspection, were cut down, including three or four which were on the pavement. The municipality will continue the work over the next few days and are keen to restore good relations with the local residents following the recent tensions between the two sides.

Alekos Vergis told Enimerosi that the Society will not allow healthy trees to be cut down just because they are obstructing work. "We agreed that the dead and dangerous trees should be removed but we won't allow any healthy trees to be cut down just because they are obstructing the redevelopment.," he said.

Pruning and beautification

The work is continuing today with the pruning of trees and shrubbery and the general beautification of the park in the presence of both Mr. Yiotis and Mr. Vergis.
