CORFU. The packages are being distributed to approximately 950 people in Corfu and Paxos from the Spiggos warehouse in Alepou.

The distribution of food and basic necessities to those in need in the Ionian Islands Food and Basic Necessities Aid Programme finally began yesterday, Wednesday.

The distribution to approximately 950 eligible people in Corfu and Paxos is being done from the Spiggos warehouse in Alepou.

Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa and Deputy Regional Governor for Health and Welfare Melita Andrioti visited the warehouse today and saw that the operation is going smoothly with no problems.

Deputy Regional Governor Melita Andrioti told Enimerosi that 242 people came to pick up packages on the first day and that to avoid large numbers of people gathering they have divided those eligible into groups of approximately 300 per day.

"Those who haven't been able to so far can pick up the items until Friday," she said.

Extra quantities

Ms. Andrioti said that the quality of the products is excellent and much more is being distributed than in other years. She added that extra quantities are being given to those with dependent family members.

The next period of distribution is planned for February and the dates will be announced nearer the time.

Ms. Andrioti said that they plan to have six distributions of food and basic necessities up to 30 June.
