CORFU. There are two independent ELTA agents in North Corfu who have still to pay out pensions.

Pensioners in some North Corfu villages told Enimerosi that they had to spend Christmas without their pensions.

These are pensions which are still paid using the old system with the postman handing them out in the villages to those unable to have it paid into a bank account and withdraw it via an ATM.

"According to the law, pensions must be paid out within ten days of the date determined by the state," the director of Corfu central ELTA post office Nikos Bakos told Enimerosi.

This year the pensions for January 2023 were made available between 21 and 23 December - on Wednesday 21 December for most pension funds. The ELTA office in Tzavros told Enimerosi that the money is not all paid at the same time for security reasons.

The three agents in Makrades, Doukades and Spartylla collaborate with ELTA and pay out the pensions to local residents.

The agent Tasos Kourtesis told Enimerosi that the process was delayed "because one of the three agents has recently ceased to collaborate with ELTA and so the burden fell on the other two. Most of the payments have been made and there are still a few villages remaining - Horepiskopi, Messaria, Kastelani Girou, Kopsohilades and Arkadades. They will be paid tomorrow. It should be pointed out that these specific pensioners themselves chose to have their pension paid in this way."
