CORFU. The Mayor and the local residents΄ association have come to an agreement and will issue a joint announcement.

The plans to create a skate park in Garitsa park will not now go ahead following the months-long protests from residents and their ongoing dispute with the municipal councillors and the local authority.

Although the Managing Authority has in its hands the plans to obtain European funding, it hasn't yet been informed of the change but reliable sources have told Enimerosi that the local authority has decided to satisfy the demands of the local residents association and the implementation of the Municipal Council's decision last March.

In fact, following discussions the Mayor and the association have agreed to sign a joint statement which will, as it were, bring an end to their dispute and show good will on both sides. What remains to be clarified is how not to lose the funding.

Apart from the skate park, which was the major sticking point, the association is satisfied with the promise that only dead and sick trees will be cut down and not healthy ones.

The same sources say that the Garitsa association has a scheduled meeting with the Mayor this afternoon and a joint statement is expected shortly after that - probably today.
