CORFU. People were puzzled as there was no problem with the weather at the time.
There was a sudden blackout in a large part of the historic centre on the eve of St. Spyridon's Day when the town was full of people.
Traditionally a large number of Corfiots as well as visitors from Orthodox countries visit the area to pay homage to the island's patron saint or to enjoy the traditional tiganites on offer. Due to the power outage, which lasted for about an hour, the Vespers service was conducted in candlelight whilst Liston and other neighbouring areas were in complete darkness.
People were puzzled as there was no problem with the weather at the time.
"It was a simple matter of some fuses blowing at the Lemonia Square substation," DEDDIE Director Nikos Sofianos told Enimerosi. "For safety reasons it was necessary to cut off the power whilst the damage was being repaired."
The power cut lasted for about an hour after which the town returned to normal.
