CORFU. The number of road accidents and driving offences in the Ionian Islands in November.

The Ionian Islands Police has issued the number of road accidents and driving offences for November.

Road accidents

There were four road accidents in Corfu, Lefkada, Cephalonia and Zakynthos in November compared to none in the corresponding month in 2021.

- One accident with a serious injury
- Three accidents with minor injuries

There was a total of four injuries - one serious and three minor.

Police data indicates that the main reasons for road accidents are the following:

- Driver is distracted
- Violation of right of way
- Not keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front
- Speeding
- Running red lights
- Driving on the wrong side of the road

Police checks

There was a total of 2,099 driving offences in November 2022 including the following:

- 61 driving under the influence
- 240 speeding
- 222 not wearing crash helmet
- 126 not wearing seat belts
- 48 using mobile phone whilst driving
- 53 driving on wrong side of road
- 9 running a red light
- 6 for dangerous driving
- 175 without driving licences
- 59 with uninsured vehicles
- 121 without MOT

There were 55 offences of parking illegally in spots reserved for those with special needs.

There were 81 arrests - 64 for driving without a licence and 17 for driving under the influence.
