Deputy Health Minister
28 Oct 2022 / 00:48

CORFU. The evaluation of the hospital administrations is in progress - The two pathologists΄ positions have already been advertised and more will follow.

The Deputy Health Minister Mina Gaga visited all clinics and laboratories of the Hospital, since she came to Corfu to be informed in person about the serious problems of Corfu Hospital. The 6th Health Region Director Yiannis Karvelis is also in Corfu.

Mrs. Gaga discussed with the medical staff, the administration, the hospital unions and the Ambulance Service (EKAB), as well as several patients, in order to record the problems, especially following the doctors' resignations.

Resignations

"There have been resignations that have been upsetting and it's not something that happens often in hospitals, so we need to understand what's going on and why they happened. I have different opinions but we are in the middle of discussions," Mrs. Gaga stated to the local media. She admitted that the recent developments with the doctors' resignations is a new thing that happened suddenly. That is why she discussed with the doctors in order to address the problem. "The first two pathologists' positions have already been advertised. More will follow after the secondary care bill is passed," she said. "However, there are many problems and it is not just a matter of administration. Problems are not solved overnight."

Administration

As for the Hospital Director's replacement, Mrs. Gaga said that at the moment the process of evaluation of the administrations by the General Secretary of the Ministry's Health Services is underway.

EKAB

Regarding the serious shortage of personnel at the Corfu EKAB, Mrs. Gaga revealed that no request has been made by EKAB's management. "In order for the Ministry to take action, a recommendation and request must first be made from EKAB's management. At the moment, I have no requests," she clarified.

However, Mrs. Gaga's statements raise questions, as there have been repeatedly requests by Corfu MPs, resolutions from the Regional Council, while there has also been communication with both executives of the Health Ministry and ΕΚΑΒ for Corfu's problems, especially since lives have been lost because there were no available ambulance.

Joint statement

The Minister then met with the Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa, the MPs, the Mayors and the 6th Health Region Director Yiannis Karvelis.

Thus, the bodies sent a joint statement focusing on the re-advertisement of the vacant positions of doctors of the recent years, the creation of an Ionian Islands EKAB branch and the creation of an autonomous Ionian Islands Health Region.
