CORFU. Alekos Avlonitis got updated on the project by the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
The Corfu SYRIZA MP Alekos Avlonitis visited the Ministry of Environment and Energy, where he met with the Director of the responsible Department Mrs. Tourta on the progress of the Corfu water supply project.
Mr. Avlonitis was informed that within the next few days the General Secretariat is expected to approve the project for the construction of dams (€146 million) through public-private partnership. The project will be completed within 4 years with 26 years of operation and maintenance.
The MP announced that the part of the project that concerns South Corfu has now been excluded from the dam project and in particular the area below the place where the Kalamiotissa dam will be built.
"This unpleasant news came from the fact that the General Secretariat excluded this part because it exceeds the budget and thus this sub-project will be funded by the ESPA Programme.
The basic obligation of the state and the responsible Directorate that is studying the project is to construct in Central and South Corfu tanks that will be connected to the existing old tanks, wherever they exist (wherever they do not exist, they will be built and wherever replacement is required, they will be replaced) in the villages and settlements of the areas where the new pipe will pass through," said Mr. Avlonitis.
The local government said that DIADEYAK is responsible for the connection of the networks per village to the central tanks.
At the same time, it was clarified that when the project will be completed, the management body will be responsible for its management. The MP stressed the non-negotiable demand of the people that this body should have the absolute responsibility and authority in the formation of water prices with social characteristics.
In addition, Mr. Avlonitis asked for information on the construction of a small hydroelectric plant that will provide free or low-cost electricity to the residences of the village of Horoepiskopi, a long-standing request of the residents that has been accepted by all governments over the years and which they promised to realise.
He also talked about the demand to create a museum near the large dam in Horoepiskopi.
The MP emphasised and asked for explanations on the question of whether the developers of the whole project took into account that there are quarries operating within less than 500 meters from the dam.
Ms. Tourta promised to provide answers to the abovementioned issues in the near future.
At the end of the meeting, Mr. Avlonitis invited the Ministry officials who are planning the whole project to visit Corfu in order to carry out inspections that will help eliminate further problems during its completion.
