CORFU. 2,398 international commercial flights in August.

The number of international flight arrivals at Corfu Airport this year continue to break all the records and the indications are that the total number of arrivals this season will be better than in 2018.

Corfu Civil Aviation Authority Employees Union President Dimitris Roussos said that the number of international flight arrivals this month will be 200 more than the same month in 2019 and 38 more than last month. This means that this will be another record-breaking month with the number of passengers arriving at the airport expected to reach 400k.

All the indications are that there will be a record-breaking number of international arrivals in 2022 - 1.6-1.63m compared to 1.5m in 2018. This is based on the assumption that there will be approximately 200k in September and at least 100k in October. To date there have been 1.33m arrivals.

UK top of the list

Yet again the UK was top of the list in August with 720 flights, followed by Germany with 371, Italy with 321, France with 203 and Poland with 144.

Problems remain

Despite the tourist income, there still remains a problem with understaffing and the obsolete business operating systems, which need to be replaced.

"We applaud the new record, the tourist income is earmarked for benefits," said Dimitris Roussos. "But the "goose that lays the golden egg" - the Civil Aviation Authority Air Navigation, which handles all the tourist traffic with safety - remains "underfed". There is understaffing and the current personnel is getting old and the current operating systems should be in a museum - most of them are over 20 years old and should have been replaced years ago."
