CORFU. Metal H2W1 road barriers are replacing the plastic bollards.

Work has begun on setting up road barriers on the Sotiriotissa section of Eth. Paleokastritsa Rd. near the turn-off for Nisi Gerekou.

The contractor Giorgos Yiotis told Enimerosi that the preliminary work has begun. "Intensive work will begin tomorrow and we estimate that the work will be completed by the end of the week."

The metal H2W1 road barriers are replacing the plastic bollards which had previously been placed along the middle of the road from Paramythoupoli until the beginning of the road barrier in Kontokali.

Plastic bollards

In this way, the constant replacement of the plastic bollards which some drivers removed so that they could turn off the road will now come to an end.

The plastic bollards were placed there in March 2020 in order to prevent the regular overtaking that was happening according to the Traffic Police, violating the double lines and leading to a lot of accidents. Nevertheless, it seems that there were plenty of drivers who weren't discouraged.

For decades road-users have been asking for a solution to the problem caused by the large number of tourist coaches and other vehicles turning off or joining Eth. Paleokastritsa Rd due to the Kontokali Bay Hotel as well as restaurants, rented accommodation, bathers, sports people and spectators and, of course, local residents.

Regional Authority proposal for traffic lights

Recently, the Ionian Islands Regional Administration also looked into the solution of traffic lights - which up to now has been rejected by everyone. Deputy Regional Governor Kostas Zorbas told Enimerosi at the time that in order to take advantage of the contract for the replacement of the 'ancient' traffic light system already in existence, an expert was asked to do a survey of that specific section of road. According to Kostas Zorbas, approval would be required from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport before traffic lights could be installed.
