CORFU. The 32-year-old man is the first inmate in Corfu to take part in the national exams.

The Corfu Prison inmate who passed the national exams and managed to get into a higher education institution is making his dream come true. From the new academic year, the 32-year-old inmate will be a student, proving that everyone deserves a second chance in life.

He is the first Corfu Prison inmate to take part in the national exams, which brought him closer to his dream. He had studied by himself and had taken the exams from the prison, which operated for the first time this year as an exam centre.

As he told Enimerosi, he wants a new beginning more than anything else. He wishes that this new step in his life will be an example and inspiration for other inmates as well.

Optimism

The inmate's success made of course the Corfu Prison's Second Chance School teachers emotional, who supported him throughout this difficult journey with voluntary tutorials, even though the inmate was not registered at the Prison School.

The Prison School teacher Nektaria Ioannou said in a message that “This is something optimistic compared to the general darkness that is surrounding us... I am very happy today. I was informed that the man who was studying all year by himself and took the national exams from the Corfu Prison, managed to get into a higher education institution.

Inmates (should) enjoy ALL their individual rights, including health care and education. Let this case be a reminder that all people can succeed if we care for them and support them. We wish the new student well in his studies and life!”

The courses

However, the way in which the 32-year-old will attend courses is expected to be reviewed by the Corfu Prison board. The solution of granting emergency leaves is being considered.
