243 driving offences in the Ionian Islands on Tuesday

CORFU. Police checks found 243 driving offences and 14 people were arrested.

Between 08:00 and 14:00 on 26 July police in Corfu, Zakynthos, Cephalonia and Lefkada carried out checks for the following:

- Theft and burglary
- Dangerous driving
- Violations of regulations at catering establishments
- Drug dealing
- Illegal immigrants

702 vehicles and 824 individuals were checked, leading to 14 arrests - 14 in Zakynthos, 5 in Cephalonia, 3 in Lefkada and 1 in Corfu - for the following offences:

- 1 for illegal possession of weapon
- 1 for outstanding court decision
- 9 for driving without a licence
- 2 for illegal trading
- 1 for closing off beach
 
There were 243 driving offences, including the following:

- 1 driving under the influence
- 39 speeding
- 11 not wearing seat belts
- 69 not wearing crash helmet
- 2 using mobile phone whilst driving
- 26 without driving licences
- 2 uninsured
- 6 without MOT

23 vehicles were immobilised for driving without a licence, driving under the influence, bald tyres and not wearing crash helmets.

Police also seized various products for illegal trading.
