CORFU. Ionian Islands Regional Governor said that the study for the construction of the facility is updated and complete.

The Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa will hold a teleconference next Wednesday afternoon along with three General Secretaries of the responsible ministries, in order to present the actual situation regarding the waste management facility in Corfu.

At this meeting it is expected to be announced that the go-ahead for the waste management facility to be put out to tender will be given in early September, as the study for Corfu is considered to be complete and the approval of the tender is a priority, along with the facility in Volos.

This was announced by the Regional Governor in response to a question from the leader of the ANASA party Theodoros Galiatsatos on Temploni at the Regional Council's meeting.

Mrs. Kratsa also pointed out that the procedures will proceed immediately for the construction of a modern facility that will lead to landfill of 10% of the waste, the study of which has been updated and adapted to the new European Convention on Human Rights and the funding has been secured. “I promise once again”, said Mrs. Kratsa, “that the Ionian Islands Region and FODSA will immediately provide a permanent solution to the waste management problem in Corfu.”

Regarding the existing situation in Temploni, the Regional Governor said that the 1.6-million technical reports for the landfill, the restoration of the terrain, the repair of the wall and the transportation of waste bales have already been submitted and funding from the Ministry of Development is expected to be received.

Regarding recycling, the Regional Governor stressed that it has not progressed very well and for this reason she will immediately submit a request for inclusion in a programme of about 15 million, in order for FODSA to take over and support the municipalities, the green spots and recycling points.
