CORFU. Deputy Mayor for Technical Works: What work has been done so far in the Garitsa and Anemomylos Parks.
Following the approval of the second phase of the Garitsa and Anemomylos Parks regeneration by the Central Corfu Finance Committee, which included the skate park, the Garitsa Park Cultural Society took action. In particular, the Society lodged an appeal to the Region and issued the following statement in which it said that the procedure followed was illegal.
“The Finance Committee held a meeting on 14 June and voted, amongst other things, for the second phase of the Garitsa and Anemomylos Parks regeneration. In order for the Finance Committee to be established, the skate park should have first been removed from the regeneration project, as the Municipal Council decided not to create a skate park and not to carry out any work concerning the skate park.
The Municipal Authority continues the injustice, the devaluation and the opposition to the citizens, while the majority of the local parties is supporting the residents' demand.
Our Society is representing more than 2,500 citizens who have collected signatures against the concreting of the park. Therefore, we have lodged an appeal to the Region as the whole procedure is illegal.”
Problems
However, until this appeal is examined, it causes problems in the supply of the rest of the equipment (street lighting, benches, two playgrounds), while the project should be completed within 15 months and any delay affects its implementation.
It is worth noting that the project was contracted on 12 January 2022, it started being implemented on 21 February 2022 and it should be completed in May 2023.
“In addition to the project, the tender also includes the supply of lighting columns, benches, two modern playgrounds and the skate park. The tender has proceeded, i.e. it has been approved by the Finance Committee. But as far as the skate park is concerned, according to a decision by the Municipal Council, whether the skate park should be removed from the supply sub-project or not should be looked into. We are waiting for the Management Authority's response in order to inform the Municipal Council. But we have not started carrying out work for the skate park," the Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros told Enimerosi. He also clarified that "until the appeal lodged is examined, it causes problems in the supply of the rest of the equipment.”
What has been done so far
The work on the rest of the project continues. According to Mr. Kalogeros, the work that has already been carried out is pruning, removal of lighting throughout the Garitsa and Anemomylos Parks, excavation for electromechanical networks, paving in Garitsa, work on the toilets and supply of slabs for the pavement.
"The contractor will proceed immediately with the construction of the seating tiers and toilets in Anemomylos. At the same time, the Technical Works Department believes that the work concerning the pavement on the side of Dimokratias Ave should not proceed, so as not to worsen the traffic problem. These works will begin towards the end of August," he explained and added that the Municipal Authority is showing its interest in the parks and the whole area by tendering and contracting the project.
The pace of the project
Mr. Kalogeros, in response to a question from Enimerosi about the pace of the regeneration project, said that these projects have specific dates that must be completed. “The contractor is committed to moving forward and completing the project on schedule. We always have this schedule in mind and if we find that we are going off schedule without knowing why, then the Technical Works Department will take the necessary actions,” he said.
