CORFU. Sharp increase in tourist arrivals - personnel finding it hard to cope.

The number of international flight arrivals at Corfu Airport in June broke the record from 2018 and with high levels of seat occupancy on the planes.

"The forecasts were confirmed with 1,827 international flight arrivals," said the President of Corfu Civil Aviation Authority Employees Union Dimitris Roussos. "There were 298,432 passengers plus 3,271 infants who didn't occupy seats. Taking into account that there were 340,043 seats available, this means that seat occupancy was 88%."

Planes waiting in queues

Dimitris Roussos says that the high number of flights often creates problems in parking the planes.

"On Friday 73 flights are expected, 38 of which are from the UK. Again, it is expected that the aircraft will have to wait until there is space available for them to park and departing passengers will be queueing outside the building as 26 flights, including 20 from UK, will be landing in the space of less than four hours (10:15-14:00)."

Understaffing and Covid infections

"We would like, once more, to express our support for all the workers at the airport," Dimitris Roussos said, "who are having to cope with the increased numbers whilst being understaffed and also having Covid cases - making their work extremely exhausting!"
