CORFU. There will now be steep fines for those lighting fires outdoors or causing fires through negligence.
New fire prevention legislation obliges the Fire Department to impose steeper fines. There will now be steep fines for those lighting fires outdoors or causing fires through negligence.
The level of fine will also increase depending on the level of risk on the day that the violation occurs.
If, for example, someone burns wood and rubbish from pruning olive trees - which often happens in Corfu between 1 May and 31 October - the basic fine will now be €500 and could be more depending on the level of risk. So the fine could be anywhere from €500 to as much as €2,000!
There will also be fines for any other act that could cause a fire. These include burning rubbish, storing or leaving flammable materials in or near wooded areas, barbecues or dropping lit cigarettes etc. on days where there is a high risk level.
