Corfu Covid Watch: Pandemic to continue receding in summer

CORFU. “It is impossible to predict whether there will be new variants of the virus”.

Corfu Covid Watch has published its latest report on the epidemic:

There was a recession of the pandemic in May both in Corfu and the rest of the country. This development confirms that the epidemic continues to recede, something that had started in February, and despite some fluctuations it gradually led to a significant reduction in the number of cases, hospitalisations and deaths.

The number of confirmed Covid cases was significantly lower than in April. At the same time, there was a large decrease in the number of hospitalisations and it is worth noting that in May only one death was recorded, whereas in the previous months there was a double-digit number of deaths.

High vaccination rates and the large number of people who have been infected over the last few months are creating high levels of immunity, partly limiting transmission of the virus and keeping hospitalisations and deaths relatively low. The weather will favour the epidemic recession. It is most likely that the number of cases and hospitalisations will remain low during the summer and the epidemic will remain in the current levels.

We do not know how long the current high levels of immunity will last. The very high transmissibility of the Omicron variant and its ability to infect people who have been vaccinated or have recovered from Covid, as well as the relaxation of measures, make it possible that various unpredictable fluctuations and temporary spikes in the epidemic may occur.

The most likely scenario is that the epidemic will continue receding in the coming months and there will be a spike in the epidemic again after the summer, when a long time will have passed since the last vaccination or recovery from Covid for a large number of people, while the weather will again favour its spread.

It is impossible to predict whether there will be new variants of the virus, which will create new waves of the epidemic, as has happened repeatedly in the past. This also happened last summer, when the Delta variant appeared and dominated since the end of the summer, while the pandemic both in Greece and Europe was receding.

It is not possible to accurately predict the development of the pandemic, as it has been proved to date. It is necessary to continue to monitor its development in order to detect new outbreaks before they become uncontrollable.

An analytical report of the Covid-19 epidemiological situation in Corfu has been posted on the Municipality website.

Since there is a pandemic recession both in Corfu and the rest of the country, the Corfu Covid Watch will stop publishing monthly reports. It will, however, continue to monitor the development of the pandemic on a local level, publishing press releases and updated reports whenever necessary.
