CORFU. About 20 bins will be removed and mixed waste will be collected from shops with the door-to-door system.

The visual pollution and the overflowing bins led to a change in the way waste is being managed in the Corfu Town historic centre.

The Central Corfu Municipal Finance Committee gave the go-ahead for the adoption of the new planning at last Monday's meeting through the approval for the amendment of the public contract with the existing contractor.

Visual pollution

The planning involves the removal of about 20 bins from the area of the Corfu Town historic centre and the collection of mixed waste produced by catering establishments, as well as other types of shops that until recently used the bins that will be removed, with the use of the door-to-door collection system by the contractor.

As the Cleaning Service pointed out in its recommendation to the Finance Committee, until now the urban waste from the catering establishments in the Corfu Town historic centre had been collected in bins placed in this area and then the contracting company emptied them in its refuse trucks.

“We have noticed, however, that large amounts of waste are being accumulated around the bins, mainly from the catering establishments in the area. This situation, apart from the fact that it is causing aesthetic damage and is creating a negative image of the island, which is one of the top tourist destinations, it is also causing a strong stench and is a source of pollution,” stated the Cleaning Service in the recommendation.

Planning

According to the planning, the contractor will be obliged to collect the mixed urban waste from the points indicated by the Service. The points for the door-to-door collection system will not exceed 100 shops, while businesses will deliver their rubbish once a day in tightly closed bags or in an individual bin they will place outside their business, in accordance with the schedule to be prepared by the responsible Municipal service.

The service will be provided in two shifts – one in the morning and one in the evening – using three small refuse trucks. The service will be provided seven days a week from June to September and six days a week from October to May.

Reactions

However, the additional amount approved for this purpose is €265,147, which caused the first reactions.

"After three years in office, the Municipal Authority has discovered that there is visual pollution and stench in the Corfu Town historic centre, due to the excessive amount of waste in bins. That is why [the Cleanining Service] proposed to the Finance Committee to approve another €265,147. Except from the fact that this shows a lack of diligence and prudent planning, which burden the citizens by €265.147, it is also being attempted in an illegal way," the Municipal Councillor Fani Tsimpouli wrote in a post on social media.
