CORFU. The Independence Day parade will go ahead as normal this year.

The 25th March Independence Day parade will go ahead as normal this year next Friday.

The public will be able to attend the parade, with all the necessary Covid measures being observed. The Ionian Islands Regional Administration is responsible for the organisation of the national anniversary and an announcement is expected in the next few days. The parade was not held the last two years due to the pandemic.

The programme

The parade celebrating the Greek Revolution in 1821 will take place at 12:45 along Agoniston Polytechniou St. and Anapiron & Thimaton Polemou St., ending at the Old Palace.

As usual, scouts, school pupils, the armed forces, civil protection units and philharmonic bands will take part. Before the parade, at 11:00, there will be a Doxology at the Metropolitan Church Spilaiotisis led by Nektarios, Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontia Islands. There will be a formal presentation by the principal of Corfu 4th Junior High School Eleni Vousolinou.

Wreaths will be laid at the statue of Ioannis Capodistrias at 12:15 and at the statue of Dionysis Solomos at 12:30.

Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa is expected to attend the parade but the government representative has not yet been announced.

School rehearsals have begun

School pupils and teachers have already begun their parade rehearsals. Regional Education Director Petros Aggelopoulos told Enimerosi that on Thursday 14 March there will only be celebratory events at schools, which will be conducted separately for each class, followed by the laying of wreaths.
