CORFU. “We are sad and disappointed with the fact that once again the older generations stand in the way of our dreams, our entertainment and the improvement of our beautiful island.”

Only the adults have been involved in the controversy over the creation of a skate park in Garitsa so far. The young people of Corfu, for whom the project is destined, were absent. That is why they decided to express their own opinion in favour of the creation of the skate park.

Through the Avaaz.org platform, they have signed a petition calling for a skate park to be constructed in Garitsa, finding a middle ground and revising the study.

The petition

Following the great controversy that has been created over the construction of a skate park in Garitsa, it is time to claim what belongs to us. Having grown up in a town that has not had a public place for chidren from the age of 10 and older to play sports in the town centre, apart from the basketball court in Garitsa, we believe that the creation of a skate park is one of the most important projects for the young people. There are many sports that can be done on such an area (skateboard, bmx, rollerskating), and the people who are doing them are a lot. Unfortunately, at the moment, athletes are forced to train in inappropriate places, such as the Town Hall, the Prefecture, etc., endangering both themselves and the people passing by.

As we are the ones directly concerned and affected by the decisions of people who would not use the skate park, we would like to make the following indications and suggestions:

- Review the study for the skate park so that a middle ground can be found for both sides.
- The park, with proper planning, can enhance the area of Garitsa and attract more locals and tourists.
- The abandoned artificial lake can be redesigned as part of the skate park (skatebowl).
- The park would attract young people of all ages and they would not have to go to the park in Alykes, which is remote and in an area that is dangerous for young children.

Those opposed to this project claim that the Garitsa Park will be concreted and that the character of the area will be altered. The skate park will certainly not create any more noise pollution than the basketball court right next to it, nor will it create any more noise pollution than the dozens of cafes and restaurants in the area. However, if skate noise is considered such a big problem, anti-noise barriers can be placed on the residential side of the area.

The adults also think that the park will be disrespectful to nature and the residents of the area. As we are also against any concreting and destruction of greenery, we have found and can present alternative design methods to the existing one. There are now professional architects who work with sustainable architecture and can design the park to be environmentally friendly.

We believe that the residents are just making excuses to prevent the construction of the park, as the area is already full of rubbish and excrement. We strongly request that proper information be provided about the benefits this park will have for the area and the young people of our island.

Finally, we would like to say that we are sad and disappointed with the fact that once again the older generations stand in the way of our dreams, our entertainment and the improvement of our beautiful island.

We would like to thank the parties of Mrs. Ydraiou, Mr. Mayioladitis, Mr. Poulis, Mr. Varouchas and Mrs. Dri for supporting us in this project.

Yours sincerely,
The young people of Corfu
