Corfu Covid Watch: Pandemic receding

CORFU. Corfu is now amongst the areas of the country with the highest vaccination rate.

The Covid epidemic in Corfu is gradually receding, after four months of continuous outbreak. In February there was a great spike in Covid cases in Corfu, which had started since the beginning of January, as well as in the whole country. There has been a quick decrease in the number of recorded Covid cases. There was also a large number of hospitalisations, but it has now decreased. At the same time, February had the highest number of deaths recorded in one month since the beginning of the epidemic.

At the beginning of February, there was a peak of the wave of the epidemic in Corfu, which resulted from the quick and very high spread of the new Omicron variant. Overall, in the last four months the epidemic has been very intense, far exceeding the previous waves of the epidemic in terms of confirmed cases, hospitalisations and deaths. The successive Delta and Omicron waves led to a prolonged and unprecedented outbreak, both in Corfu and the whole country. However, hospitalisations, serious cases and deaths in Corfu, despite their significant increase, were at lower levels than in the rest of the country.

The spread of the virus in Corfu is now significantly decreasing, while the epidemic is expected to continue to recede. The high vaccination rate and the large number of people who have been infected with Covid over the last few months create significant levels of immunity, preventing uncontrolled spread, and reduce the incidence of severe cases. This, combined with the end of winter, is making us believe that the epidemic is beginning to recede. The now available drugs that can prevent vulnerable groups from becoming seriously ill are also expected to help reduce hospitalisations.

To date, more than 80% of the adult population of Corfu has received the initial vaccination, while more than 50% have received the booster shot. For people over-60s, the percentage is estimated to be over 90% and most of them have had the booster shot.

Therefore, Corfu is amongst the areas of the country with the highest vaccination rate. This has contributed significantly to a relative reduction in deaths from Covid, which is about half that of the rest of the country. It has also helped to protect the health system from being too much under pressure.

However, the fact that the epidemic is beginning to recede and the restrictive measures are gradually being lifted should not create an illusion that the pandemic is completely under control. Based on existing scientific knowledge on COVID-19, we do not know how long the current high levels of immunity will last. It is very likely that there will be new outbreaks of the epidemic, and it is possible that there will be new variants of the virus, which will create new waves of the epidemic, as has happened repeatedly in the past. Constantly monitoring the epidemic is still necessary, while the authorities and citizens should be in readiness to respond effectively to new outbreaks and new waves of the epidemic. An analytical report of the Covid-19 epidemiological situation in Corfu has been posted on the Municipality website.
