CORFU. He witnessed for himself the poor condition of the school building.

The Deputy Minister of Interior Stelios Petsas, following his meeting with the Central Corfu Mayor Meropi Ydraiou in Maraslio, announced that projects, beneficial not only for the local community but also for the whole Corfu, will be included in the ‘Antonis Tritsis’ programme.

€14 million projects for the Central Corfu Municipality have already been included in the programme (outdoor swimming pool in NAOK, indoor training centre on the Corfu Gymnastics Association plot, Gouvia - Kontokali Primary and Nursery Schools). Mr. Petsas also said that more projects will follow, such as the biological treatment of Achilleion with a budget of more than €6.7 million, which is part of a bigger €19 million plan to upgrade the entire island’s infrastructure, including the two other Municipalities. “We will also see this being included in the ‘Antonis Tritsis’ programme very soon, in March,” said Mr. Petsas.

The Vocational High School

He also announced that the reconstruction and maintenance of the Vocational High School will be funded. In fact, he visited and witnessed for himself the poor condition of the school building and he even said that the school’s image is disappointing. “The funding for both the Vocational High School and the Kontokali - Gouvia Schools prove that we want our children to love their school,” he said.

The Municipality has already requested a funding of €1.1 million, but, for now, Mr. Petsas did not promise that this will be the exact amount. He also said that they will continue to support the local government – the Central Corfu Municipality in particular – so that it can deal with emergencies caused by natural disasters.

“We have allocated €750,000 for such repairs, while we have also discussed the studies that are necessary in order to address the issue of landslides and we are here to assist with whatever else is needed,” said Mr. Petsas.

Emergency funding

Referring to the pressure that local government and the country’s citizens are under, due to the imported energy price increases, he said that soon, in collaboration with the Central Union of Greek Municipalities (KEDE) and the Ministry of Finance, Municipalities will be supported with extra funding to address the problems that water supply and sewerage companies, as well as School Committees, have in terms of energy prices.

Public Recruitment Office tender

Mr. Petsas also announced that next September, a Public Recruitment Office (APSEP) tender will be carried out. Through this, the major issue of understaffing of Municipalities, which is making it difficult to utilise resources from the various programmes, can finally be addressed.

Great projects

Mrs. Ydraiou said that the projects included in the ‘Antonis Tritsis’ programme are great and very important and that the local government and the local community have been demanding them for years.
