CORFU. Two private individuals have expressed interest in plots of land in Lefkimmi.

The South Corfu Municipality is running out of time for the construction of the Waste Transfer Station, following a long consultation and controversy – both social and political – process regarding its location.

Shortly before the end of 2021, the lease of the plot of land, on which the Waste Transfer Station will be built, had finally been put out to tender. This is one of the key steps for the transfer of waste to Palairos.

To date, the Municipality has been leasing the Temploni Waste Transfer Station with the unbearable amount of €12,500 per month, while the rubbish is still going back and forth, from South to Central Corfu and back to the Lefkimmi Port.

Two private individuals have expressed interest in the tender for a plot of land in Lefkimmi.

According to Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kourtesis, the Municipality is in the process of evaluating the bids. “We hope that within the week the tender envelopes will be opened. The plots of land will be checked and whichever fulfils the requirements will be selected.”

The Deputy Mayor told Enimerosi that “the construction of the Waste Transfer Station is now essential and given that the production of waste in South Corfu is around 20 tons per day, we are in the final stages of the licensing procedures.” In terms of social consensus, he said: “I believe that the citizens have now understood the necessity of the facility.”

Mr. Kourtesis estimates that with the signing of the lease contract, the South Corfu Municipality will proceed immediately with the construction of the Waste Transfer Station with funding from the Operational Programme ‘Environment and Sustainable Development’.
