CORFU. The focus on ΄major΄ technical works has led to less priority being given to the ΄smaller΄ problems which, nevertheless, are equally dangerous for drivers.
An Enimerosi reader from South Corfu has expressed her concern about the large ditches at the side of the roads. As can be seen in the photos, the ditches running alongside the road in Ano Messonghi near the filling station have no warning signs and no barriers to prevent accidents.
The road is also not well-lit and consequently is a danger spot for drivers and passengers due to the poor visibility.
These are, of course, not the only ditches on the island as many drivers will testify from their own experience - having fallen into them or even overturned.
Although they are necessary in order to carry away any excess water, the ditches are also everyday 'traps' for drivers, especially when they are overgrown with vegetation or it is dark.
Locals get to know where the danger spots are and are able to avoid them, but the same doesn't apply to visitors. However, the huge problems with the road network means that the focus is on ΄major΄ technical works - leading to less priority being given to the more 'minor΄ problems.
It is the Regional Authority that is responsible for the main roads and the smaller and rural roads are the responsibility of the Municipalities.
