CORFU. ND MP Stefanos Gikas expressed his satisfaction. "This is very important and will drive the growth of maritime tourism in Corfu and the region in general."

Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas was informed by the Managing Director of the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (TAIPED) that today it has put out an international invitation for tenders for the funding, development, operation, maintenance and long-term use of the Mega Yacht marina in Corfu.

This is considered to be a very positive development, in line with Corfu Port's Master Plan, which provides for the development of the Mega Yacht marina.

Of particular interest was the information presented to the MP regarding the infrastructue and proposed usage included in the invitation for tenders. A separate entrance for the marina is provided for as well as the development of hotels, shops, supermarkets, gyms etc.

The Mega Yacht marina is a very important project and will drive the growth of maritime tourism in Corfu and the region in general. It will also create new jobs and it has been shown that yacht owners spend two to five times more money than tourists staying in hotels.

Mr. Gikas was shown a study by the London School of Economics, according to which, with 1,000 more yachts of 35m or more mooring in Greece, approximately 23,000 new jobs will be created directly or indirectly.

It should be noted that Greece is lagging behind other countries with regard to maritime tourism and it has an income of just €158 from visitors with large yachts compared to €1.37bn in France and €2.24bn in Italy.

Consequently, the marina will contribute greatly to the development of tourism in Corfu as well as the local and national economy. The tourist product in Corfu and Greece will be significantly improved.

Following the meeting, Stefanos Gikas made the following statement:

"Today is an important day for Corfu! After two and a half years of effort, I have the pleasure of announcing that an international invitation for tenders has been issued for Corfu Mega Yacht marina.

I would like to thank the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who has supported this effort right from the beginning.

There has been excellent collaboration with the Managing Director of TAIPED Dimitris Politis, the Minister for Marine and Island Policy Yiannis Plakiotakis, Corfu Port Authority Managing Director Spyros Zervopoulos and the local authorities and our election promises are now being fulfilled and moving forward.

I cannot hide my joy, as the benefits for our island will be huge once the investment has been completed. It is worth pointing out as an example that for every €1 spent on mooring at a marina, €5-10 goes to the local economy for fuelling, supplies, repairs, agency fees, wages etc.

The invitation for tenders has gone out just one day after the signing of the contract for the marina at Cafe Yiali, which makes things even better!

Corfu is developing and is becoming a centre for quality tourism.

This is an important component of our efforts - and our main priority - to make Corfu the centre for maritime tourism in the southeastern Mediterranean.

We continue with optimism, focussed on our goal!"
