PAXOS. “When all this is over, we will support any constructive effort that will improve the lives of every human being,” said the 96-year-old woman’s family.

On the occasion of the necessity for the transfer of our 96-year-old bedridden and seriously ill mother and grandmother from Paxos to the Corfu General Hospital on 9 February 2022, we would like to thank the following people:

1. Mr. Ioannis Vellianitis who volunteered selflessly, following a suggestion by the Paxos Health Centre Director, since there was no other driver, to transfer the patient from our home to Gaios Port – even though it was not his responsibility – in the only way that this could be done within the available time, so that the patient would not miss her last chance to be transferred to Corfu, following the failed attempt to board the ship’s morning itinerary.

2. The crew of the EKAB ambulance that picked up the patient and waited for us at Corfu Port and transferred her safely.

3. The Corfu General Hospital administration and staff for their affection, medical care and interest.

Our family, as well as our mother-grandmother, is going through difficult times. We have chosen to remain silent and support her and we want to thank everyone who showed their interest and remains by our side during these difficult times.

We are sorry to be informed that time is being spent on finding someone to blame, when it could be used in a positive way for the community of Paxos and towards the organisation of a more efficient health care system.

We would not want either a member of our family, or any other person, to be forced in the future to experience the transferring conditions offered to our mother-grandmother. As the emotions of this experience – horror, frustration, a feeling of abandonment and violation of a senior citizen’s dignity – are forever etched in our minds and hearts, when all this is over, we will support any constructive effort that will improve the lives of every human being, and especially those in need.

Sincerely,
Eftihia Tsagaraki-Zenebisi
