CORFU. Residents protesting - Fear of accidents - Request for Central Corfu Municipality to widen the road.
Local residents are protesting about the lorries transporting materials from the nearby quarry. The heavy lorries use the municipal road, which is already dangerous with its bends and steep, slippery slopes, and frequently block the road.
Residents have been protesting to the community president Dimitris Mandilas, who told Enimerosi that he receives complaints every day. "We have seen an inexplicable lack of interest from the municipality," he said. "We have spoken to the quarry manager, who says he understands our problem. However, the decision needs to come from the municipality to do something about the road, which has continuous heavy loads going along it, resulting in damage to the surface, making it even more dangerous."
"The community in Sokraki has already been hit by the creation of the quarry and the road has suffered deterioration due to the heavy lorries transporting their loads, mainly between the former Club Med and Ikos," he added. "Locals and anyone else using the road comes up against these heavy vehicles and has to reverse. One has to wonder what will happen once the tourist season begins. Any accidents are not just accidents - they are due to criminal negligence."
Local residents are asking for the road to be repaired, resurfaced and widened, using the money given by Ikos to the Municipality.
The community president has written a letter asking for the matter to be discussed at Central Corfu Municipal Council. The letter was given to the Council President and Giorgos Kaloudis, leader of the Prota I Kerkyra party, has proposed that it be discussed at the next council meeting.
