In search of land for construction of new Corfu Prison

Corfu Prison
25 Jan 2022 / 17:03

CORFU. The Civil Protection special adviser Adonis Iordanidis met yesterday with the Corfu Lawyers Association President, the Central Corfu Mayor and the Corfu Deputy Regional Governor.

The purpose of this visit was to discuss the issue of the construction of a new Corfu Prison. At first, Mr. Iordanidis visited the prison and met with the Director Mrs. Stavrou.

He also met with the Corfu Lawyers Association President Yiannis Kontos, the Central Corfu Mayor Meropi Ydraiou and the Corfu Deputy Regional Governor Kostas Zorbas.

At the meeting, Yiannis Kontos gave a historical background of this issue in the last 15 years and asked Mr. Iordanidis that the Ministry, and he himself, should deal with the issue of the construction of new Corfu Prison. Thus, he did not consider today's meeting as a courtesy visit, but rather as absolutely essential.

He also explained the reasons why this project is so important for the island’s lawyers, since it is absolutely linked to the operation of the Corfu Court of Appeal.

It goes without saying that the new project is necessary to be carried out away from town and to be a maximum security prison. Following the relocation of the Corfu Prison, the old building will become a museum of human freedom and a multicultural exhibition space.

Visits to plots of land

Mr. Iordanidis is currently visiting sites to see if they are suitable. At first, he will visit three or four potentially suitable properties, with priority given to those owned by legal entities governed by public law and then private ones. The basic premise is that the properties must be free of encumbrances. He is first visiting Rekini, where there is a plot of about 60 stremma, which was once intended to be used for the creation of the North Corfu landfill.

There are also some other alternatives. However, as Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas told Enimerosi, “finding a property is still at an early stage. Mr. Iordanidis’ visits are exploratory. The Municipality has suggested 3-4 plots, which should be at least 30-40 stremma and free of encumbrances.”
