CORFU. Τhe road surfacing works for the improvement of the Tzavros-Paleokastritsa Road and the connecting roads in Central Corfu will begin in March.

The long-awaited first Regional Authority major roadworks project for the improvement of the Tzavros-Paleokastritsa Road and the connecting roads in Central Corfu, with a budget of €4,577,400, finally begins.

Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure and Technical Works Manolis Orphanoudakis told Enimerosi that the first works will begin next week, with technical works in particular. Mr. Orphanoudakis met earlier this week with the Ionian Islands Technical Services and the contractor to plan the first works to be carried out and provide guidelines for the works that will be carried out immediately – before the road surfacing begins in March – which will upgrade the worn-out road network.

The first works

Special emphasis has been put on the repair of the damage caused to infrastructure by the 'Ballos' storm on October 14 2021, which are the main priority. In particular, the technical works that can be carried out immediately are the following:

- Wall in Viros

- Wall in Kastelani Messi

- Bridge and wall in Yiannades

- Stone wall before Paleokastritsa

- Some pipe work (on the parallel road of Eth. Paleokastritsa Rd. and in Potamos road)

-Construction of pavements (Aqualand in Agios Ioannis and sections in Alepou - Triklino)

Road surfacing works in March

According to Mr. Orphanoudakis, the abovementioned works are expected to be completed by March, so that the road surfacing works can begin immediately afterwards, thus creating the right conditions for safe driving and, of course, will adding value to the island's tourist product – something that all corfiots are requesting.

From March until the beginning of the tourist season we will proceed with the road surfacing works, which will be carried out in large sections, while the Tzavros-Paleokastritsa Road will be the main priority. In the summer season these works will stop because of the tourist season and technical works will start again in other parts. In autumn, the surfacing works will continue and then road markings will also be created,” said Mr. Orphanoudakis.

According to the plan, the project is expected to be completed within 18 months. However, they are hoping that it can be delivered within the next 12 months.
