CORFU. A new vaccination stream will start operating at the Corfu Hospital from Friday 21 January for children aged 5-11.

There is no interest from private paediatricians in Corfu to assist in the vaccination of children from all over the island, which is being carried out from 18 December exclusively at the Corfu Town Health Centre. The Ministry of Health asked the Corfu Medical Association to contact private paediatricians in Corfu, in order to carry out the vaccination of children over 5 years old, but there has been no interest.

However, according to medical sources, from Friday 21 January a vaccination stream will start operating at Corfu Hospital for children aged 5-11 with the Pfizer vaccine.

Possible solutions

The Corfu Medical Association President Dimitris Kaloudis told Enimerosi that either doctors will be requisitioned or the vaccination of children will be carried out by family doctors (General Practitioners). However, the pressure on the Corfu Town Health Centre is unbearable, as it is above its limit due to a shortage of personnel.

Vaccinations by Health Centre Director

It should be clarified that in addition to vaccinations for other population groups, the Corfu Town Health Centre provides all kinds of health services (home vaccinations, emergency medical care etc.) with the minimum staff available. In fact, although the Corfu Town Health Centre has been responsible for the vaccination of children, it does not have its own paediatrician and is using one from Agios Markos Health Centre PIKPA, while due to the very high demand, the vaccination of children is now being carried out by the Health Centre Director Sophia Mavropoulou.

It should also be noted that the vaccination of children is being carried out every Tuesday, Wednesday (morning and afternoon), Thursday, Friday, Saturday (morning) and Sunday (morning and afternoon).
